Riesling d'Alsace is a gastronomic wine par excellence, beyond its natural pairings with Alsatian cuisine (such as sauerkraut or smoked pork shoulder).
This Riesling Muehlforst is an elegant accompaniment to fish and white meats.
Riesling has been cultivated since Roman times. This grape variety soon took the name Riesling, a name that comes from 'riesen' (which means 'to run' in German), because before it had acclimatized to the Alsatian climate, it was highly susceptible to 'coulure' (i.e., when the weather conditions are poor, such as rain during flowering, the flowers fall off). Somewhat different from its German cousin, Alsace Riesling has been planted in our region since the end of the 15th century.
It was frequently cited in subsequent centuries, but it wasn't until the second half of the 19th century that its cultivation took off. It was not until the 1960s that it became Alsace's leading cultivar. Today, it accounts for almost 22% of the area planted in Alsace.
Muehlforst is Hunawihr's largest “lieu-dit”. It offers exceptional southern exposure and is characterized by limestone soils.
